Snowblind was the albums working title, but Vertigo Records executives were reluctant to release an album with such an obvious drug reference. It was the first album by Sabbath not produced by Rodger Bain guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. Patrick Meehan, the bands then-manager, was listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the albums production was minimal. The following are the back CD images for the 1996 & 2009 releases respectively. Album 1972 10 Songs. Such craziness was standard-issue for the era, and the trippy-indulgent instrumental FX, the warped time signatures of Cornucopia, and the cocaine-praising Snowblind further exposed and reflected the tenor of the times. Black Sabbath Vol. 4 often shortened to Volume 4 is the fourth album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in 1972. The album was originally to be titled Snowblind, after one of several songs referring to cocaine use, and features several Sabbath classics, such as Tomorrow's Dream, Snowblind, Supernaut and Changes. Volume 4 demonstrates Black Sabbath beginning to experiment with the heavy sound they had become known for. Although some songs are in their trademark style, others demonstrate a soft, orchestral approach. The album title appears as Black Sabbath Vol. 4 on the vinyl labels. All tracks by Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward. This was originally supposed to be called 'Snowblind', but that name was rejected by the record company due to the song's obvious references to cocaine. Long ago I wandered through my mind In the land of fairy tales and stories Lost in happiness I knew no fears Innocence and love was all I knew It was an illusion. 4 is the point in Black Sabbath's career where the band's legendary drug consumption really starts to make itself felt. And it isn't just in the lyrics, most of which are about the blurry line between reality and illusion. 4 has all the messiness of a heavy metal Exile on Main St. and if it lacks that album's overall diversity, it does find Sabbath at their most musically varied, pushing to experiment amidst the drug-addled murk.
