Szászcsávás is a small village located in the Kis-Küküllõ River valley of Transylvania, within the current political borders of Romania. The majority of the villages 900 inhabitants are Hungarians, with 20 Gypsies. Szászcsávás holds a unique place in Hungarian music history. Whereas Hungarian folk singing is always in unison, this is perhaps the only village where polyphonic singing is found. Folk Music from Transylvania. The Szaszcsavas Band is a Gypsy orchestra from a village of some 900 souls. This group plays local dance music of a high order, but still the kind of small string band that plays the village hops. The wonderful music is the rich result of Romanian, Hungarian and Gypsy interpenetration. 64 minutes. Transylvanian Folk Music, 2016. Gypsy Székelyverbunk, 02:41. Cigány Hallgató, 04:44. Transylvania, a historical province in present-day Romania, has been historically and culturally linked to both Central Europe and Southeastern Europe, and its music reflects those influences. Inhabited by Romanians, Székelys and other Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, Slovaks, Gypsies and others, Transylvania has long been a center for folk music from all of these different cultures. Bartók and Kodály collected many folk songs from Transylvania early in the 20th century
